Real Glass Neon or LED Neon Signs - Which is Best?

Neon look signs, made from LED flex, are fast gaining in popularity. But is an LED light that looks like a neon sign a better choice than a real glass neon sign? How do the faux neon signs differ from the vintage-style glass tube signs? Do they compare favorably and which option is preferable for uses such as indoor wall art, outdoor business signage or portable party signs?

Let’s examine some of the main differences between glass neon signs and LED signs that look like a modern version of the iconic vintage signs we’re all so familiar with.

What’s the difference between neon and LED signs?

There are several notable differences between the two types of signs, and both have a lot to recommend them. We’ve highlighted the differences we are most frequently asked about in the following infographic.

Which is preferable for business signage?

A lot depends on how large the sign will be, where it will be installed, and what you're using it for. For businesses, the considerations are most likely to be:

  • Curb appeal & aesthetics - Both types of signs are good at getting attention. Some maintain that vintage-style neon has a significant lead over LED flex in terms of looks which, given its cult following, is probably true for some types of stores. Nevertheless, the bright, clean, modern look of faux neon LED signs is proving extremely popular and is fast overtaking its "noble" competitor.
  • Grabbing attention - There's no doubt about it, LED lights are definitely brighter and can even be seen shining during the day, whereas the light from glass tube neon signs is considerably softer and more prominent after dark.
  • Space requirements - Not an issue for all businesses but small cafes or stores may prefer LED as it's 1/4 to 1/3 thinner than the glass option. They're also very lightweight and can simply be popped on the counter (with a stand), hung from somewhere or wall-mounted.
  • Overall cost - When you take into account the longevity, any professional installation requirements, maintenance, and replacement costs, LED is almost always the most cost-effective option.
  • Energy savings - Here, an LED sign is the clear choice as it can be up to 10x more energy efficient than the same sign made from glass neon tubes.
  • Versatility - LED lights come in a much wider range of colours and can be bent much more tightly, giving you better options as regards shapes and styles of signage. Animation options are also better, and you can pair the LED with other signage mediums, such as channel letter or UV printing to create something spectacular.
  • Safety - Glass neon signs are breakable and heat up. LED lights are encased in a flexible material, usually attached to a shatter-proof acrylic backboard, and they don't even get very warm, much less hot.

Which type of light-up sign is better for indoor wall art?

Not many people have glass neon signs in their homes, and those that do usually hang them in the home bar area. It would be very unusual to find a glass tube neon sign in a children’s room, for example. This is because glass neon can get quite warm and is heavy and breakable. Conversely, faux neon signs made from LED neon are shatter-resistant and cool to the touch. They are also free of both glass and mercury, making them a safer option for home use. Even if you’re not worried about small children, LED signs are probably a better option for indoor wall art simply because they're lightweight and so easy to install or hang, no electrician is required.

Is a glass neon sign or an LED sign more portable?

Weddings, birthday parties, corporate events, tradeshows, sporting events, art installations, music festivals – all benefit from illuminated signage. Traditional glass neon signs can be used but usually aren’t due to the size, weight, fragility and cost, not to mention the installation requirements. LED signage, on the other hand, is quite durable, lightweight and easy to transport safely. This, combined with the lower price point of LED flex signs and the fact that you can just hang them up and plug them in, make them a fantastic option for event signage.
